Top 3 Myths About Wearing Dentures

Posted on 8/10/2018 by Sergio Ortegon
Top 3 Myths About Wearing DenturesIdeally, we like to see our patients keep all of their natural teeth. However, from time to time, whether from age, injury or decay, the teeth are gone and dentures are needed.

We hear a lot of misconceived ideas about dentures and receive a lot of questions from our patients about them, so today we'd like to debunk the top three myths about wearing dentures.

Dentures Will Last Forever.

While this would be nice, unfortunately it's not true. Think of dentures the same way that you think about glasses, even if you take care of them, over time your prescription changes and they need to be replaced. The same is true for dentures.

They are usually made out of acrylic and porcelain, and they can break. Additionally, the shape of your jaw changes and sometimes you'll need to be refitted for new dentures. Taking good care of them will make them last longer, but they will need to be replaced at some point.

Everyone Will Know I'm Wearing Dentures.

We get a lot of patients in our office who are worried about dentures looking fake. With today's technology and the skill of our staff, we are able to make your dentures look very real. If you notice that they're slipping or starting to look obvious, please call us for a checkup. It could simply be that they need to be realigned.

It Will Be Difficult for Me to Eat With Dentures

This is another myth that is completely untrue. Many people believe that with dentures there are a lot of diet restrictions and lists of things you cannot eat.

While you may have personal dietary restrictions, anything that you're able to eat with your regular teeth, you may continue to eat with your dentures. If you do happen to notice that you're having trouble eating something, due to slippage or ill-fitting dentures, please call us right away.
