What to do When You Need Dentures Replaced

Posted on 6/15/2018 by Sergio Ortegon
Dentures Ortegon Prosthodontics TX 77401It is very important to continue to see your dentist routinely for exams even after you get dentures. Oral hygiene is always important. Things can still happen after all your teeth are pulled, and having good oral health can affect how you feel overall.

It is our job to keep you informed on how things are going by doing exams on your gums, jawbone, and yes, your dentures. Here are some tips on when it may be time to get a replacement pair of dentures.

What to do When You Need New Dentures

Believe it or not dentures are only expected to last you five to ten years. There are many things that can affect the lifespan. How you take care of them, how you store them, what products you use on them. It is important to continue to come in for exams so we can check the condition of them and how well they fit.

As you age your jaw bone and gums will shrink causing dentures to feel loose. If you bite hard, or you are a person who grinds their teeth this can cause them to wear down quicker. Not soaking your dentures when you take them out can make them dry out and ruin them.

Dentures are fragile, and may break if dropped onto a hard surface like your countertop. If you are having a hard time keeping them snug in your mouth, it is probably time to come in and see us. We may also have a couple options for you.

If you have been happy with your dentures, and just need a replacement we can get you in, and get going on making you a new pair. We will have to start over with the X rays since your mouth has changed shape, so we can get them fitting right again. We can also give you information on implant dentures.

Traditional dentures are not for everyone. Implant dentures are a good replacement for many people because they do not come out. We will need to make sure there is enough bone in your jaw to secure the posts, but this may be an exciting option for you also.

These kinds of questions should be taken care of during an office visit. Typically questions over the phone will be avoided, because each person is different. We would never want to tell you that you are a good candidate for dental implants unless we so an exam and speak with you in person. Whatever works out best for you is what we will encourage you to go with.

We can answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your new denture decisions. Our goal is to keep you free from pain, and make you happy and healthy. Remember the first step to good oral health is just one phone call away. Call us today to set up an appointment.
