Crowns Can Give You a Real Reason to Smile!

Posted on 11/15/2015 by Sergio Ortegon
A diagram of how a dental crown works. We at Ortegon Prosthodontics know that nothing is quite so annoying as knowing your teeth aren't up to the task. Whether it be difficulty chewing or a chipped tooth the prevents your smile from being all that it can be - crowns can help. Crowns are an extremely useful tool that can be utilized to fix a number of dental issues

Crown? What's a crown?

The same way a king or queen wears a crown upon their head in order to convey royalty, so does a tooth wear a crown to promote dental health and fix cosmetic issues. A crown is a porcelain or composite mold of a tooth made to fit over your tooth to strengthen it and enhance it's appearance.

Why would I need a crown

Crowns can be used for a number of reasons both cosmetic and restorative. Perhaps your tooth has had a filling for a number of years and the time has come for the filling to be replaced. Many times in this scenario if the new filling will leave the tooth with too little of it's original form to be structurally sound a crown will be used to ensure a fully functional and healthy tooth.

In addition, a tooth that has been chipped or cracked can be brought back to full function and original appearance with the help of a crown. Crowns are also often used to:

•  Anchor a bridge
•  Strengthen a tooth that has been weakened by root canal therapy
•  Bring a uniform look to teeth that have been stained or are misshapen
•  Restore proper bite and alignment issues

If you have been putting off getting a crown now is a great time to contact us to explore your options. With the end of the year quickly approaching and your dental insurance premium met, it is time to utilize those dental benefits!
